1. 多模式自主监督学习-自动驾驶相关 Ph.D. Position Multi-modal self-supervised deep learning for self-driving vehicles

Teaser Challenge: Learn 3D environment representations from all vehicle sensor modalities (vision, lidar but also audio or radar) jointly with limited data annotation. Change: Develop joint self-supervised learning for multi-modal sensor data, a novel shared environment representation, and exploit geometric and temporal constraints. Impact: Simplify and improve learning-based perception for new vehicle sensors and sensor configurations for safer highly automated driving.

Job description

In this project, you will develop novel multi-modal deep learning techniques to detect the dynamic and static obstacles in the urban environment in self-driving applications. Existing approaches often focus on training models for a single sensor modality (vision, lidar, radar, or audio) or a specific pair of sensors. The overarching goal here is to develop a generic multi-modal self-supervised learning approaches to exploit the complementary nature of all available sensors during training, and thus compensate for the lack of annotated data for some sensors modalities (e.g. acoustics, radar). A possible direction is to simultaneously learn a shared 3D environment representation, and the sensor models to map their measurements to this shared space while preserving measurement uncertainty. To regularize the task, we will seek to exploit geometric constraints in the representation and self-supervised learning strategies. Additionally, past and future observations could be incorporated into the learning strategy to exploit the temporal consistency of the dynamic scene, reducing uncertainty in the constructed representation and possibly capturing cues to anticipate future traffic events. If successful, the developed methods enable self-driving vehicles to achieve state-of-the-art online perception performance for both well-known (vision, lidar) and novel sensing modalities (audio) without the need for extensive data annotation.The host research group – the Intelligent Vehicles group - focuses on environment perception, dynamics & control, and interaction with humans for intelligent vehicles and automated driving in complex unstructured urban environments. The group is part of the Cognitive Robotics department at the 3ME Faculty, which aims to develop intelligent robots and vehicles that will advance mobility, productivity and quality of life. The department combines fundamental research with work on physical demonstrators in areas such as self-driving vehicles, collaborative industrial robots, mobile manipulators and haptic interfaces.The new AI lab on 3D Understanding (3DUU) initiated by the 3D Geoinformation Research Group and the Intelligent Vehicles Group is one of the Delft Artificial Intelligence Labs (DAI-Labs). It is a cross-disciplinary research lab seeking to develop state-of-the-art AI techniques for interpreting 3D data and reconstructing 3D objects for large-scale urban applications.Department3DUU is a Delft Artificial Intelligence Lab (DAI-Lab). Artificial intelligence, data, and digitalization are becoming increasingly important when looking for answers to major scientific and societal challenges. In a DAI-lab, experts in ‘the fundamentals of AI technology’ along with experts in ‘AI challenges’ run a shared lab. As a PhD, you will work with at least two academic members of staff and three other PhD candidates. In total, TU Delft will establish 24 DAI-Labs where 48 Tenure Trackers and 96 PhD candidates will have the opportunity to push the boundaries of science by using AI. Each team is driven by research questions that arise from scientific and societal challenges and contribute to the development and execution of domain-specific education. Instead of the usual 4-year contract, you will receive a 5-year contract. Approximately a fifth of your time will be allocated to developing ground breaking learning materials and educating students in these new subjects. The experience you will gain by teaching will be invaluable for future career prospects. All team members have many opportunities for self-development.   • Completed a MSc degree in computer science, artificial intelligence, applied mathematics, or robotics;
  • Strong interests and expertise in machine learning (in particular deep learning), numerical linear algebra, statistics, robotics and/or geoinformatics, preferably with a strong publication record;
  • An affinity with teaching and guiding students;
  • Excellent Python and/or C++ programming skills, and experience with Git;
  • Experience with deep-learning frameworks (PyTorch/TensorFlow) at the MSc level, preferably applied to point cloud data and 3D sensors (LiDAR, stereo vision), 2D computer vision, radar, and/or acoustic event detection and localization;
  • Ability to act independently as well as to collaborate effectively with members of a larger interdisciplinary team, take initiative, be result oriented, organized and creative;
  • Good command of verbal and written English.

2. Ph.D. Position: Strategies for building data capacity

Description

This fully-funded Ph.D. position is part of the EU Horizon 2020 Marie Sklodowska Curie ITN project entitled "ODECO: Towards a Sustainable Open Data ECOsystem" (see www.odeco-research.eu). ODECO is a four-year project involving 15 PhD projects covering each a specific part of the open data ecosystem. The central aim of the ODECO consortium network is to train the next generation of creative and innovative early stage open data researchers, to unlock their creative and innovative potential to address current and future challenges in the creation of user driven, circular and inclusive open data ecosystems.Current developments in the field of open data are characterised as highly fragmented. Open data ecosystems are often developed in different domains in isolation of each other and with little involvement of potential users, resulting in approaches that significantly limit open data reusability for users. This reduces innovation and the ability to create new valued added goods and services. Isolated domains also undermine interoperability for users acting as a barrier to data sharing. Efforts are also uncoordinated in open data training and research, where multidisciplinary approaches are scant.Bringing together different sectors (research, private sector, government, non-profit) and different perspectives (public administration, law, business, engineering), ODECO aims to address the central challenge of realizing a user driven, circular and inclusive open data ecosystem. Through its novel research and training programme, ODECO will provide early stage researchers with relevant open data knowledge, skills and research experience.The offered PhD position - ODECO ESR1 - is to raise data awareness and to build digital capacity to empower civil society in finding solutions and to take actions that improve their lives. By using participatory design methods to include a broader audience of non-specialist data users (e.g., citizens or civil servants) and connect them with data professionals, to co-create new public services, the ESR1 project aims to:

  1. Identify potentials and barriers of equal access to and data use
  2. Develop novel collaborative techniques and participatory methods to engage non-specialist data users constructively in co-creation with open data
  3. Examine the impact of participation in co-creative ‘data-sessions’, by conceptualising and assessing data literacy, empowerment, and reuse of data for the development of new public services
  4. Developing a set of practices and strategies for building data capacity and empowering civil society.

During the Ph.D., the candidate will conduct this research and prepare scientific articles presenting the research at conferences and in journals. To enable the candidate to do this successfully, TU Delft offers personal and professional training courses in the form of a graduate school, in which the candidate will participate (the fee is paid by the project and there are no additional costs for this). Furthermore, in addition to her/his scientific supervisors, the applicant will receive an independent senior researcher as mentor, to aid her/his personal career development.As a Marie Curie ITN researcher, you will have the opportunity to conduct practical internships at world leading universities and case studies through the EU ITN network. The PhD candidate will be working at the Human-Centered Design Department (IDE faculty) and jointly supervised by dr. Ingrid Mulder (Faculty of Industrial Design Engineering) and prof. Marijn Janssen (Faculty of Technology, Policy and Management) and co-supervised by dr. Rikke Magnussen (Aalborg University).

Considerable research on open government data has been conducted in the past decade. At first, much of this research focused on the provision of open government data, while this slowly started shifting towards data usability in the past few years. For example, recent research examines how citizens can become more engaged with their government when they use open government data. However, not much is known about the influence of resources offered by NGOs on the usability of open government data. For example, some NGOs combine, enrich and visualise open government data. By doing so, NGOs function as an intermediary or infomediary, making government data more useful and understandable for citizens. However, NGOs' role as an intermediary between governments as data providers and citizens as data users has not yet been investigated in-depth, while this type of research may lead to valuable insights for open data policy makers on how to improve open government data usability.During the Ph.D., the candidate will conduct this research and prepare scientific articles presenting the research at conferences and in journals. To enable the candidate to do this successfully, the TU Delft offers personal and professional training courses in the form of a graduate school, in which the candidate will participate (the fee is paid by the project and there are no additional costs for this).
